2023 Fall

November 2023: Presentation at Baboquivari High School

Three of our PAWS members and executive officers went to an outreach event in the Tohono O'odham Nation during Native American Heritage Month. We gave a presentation, "Understanding Energetics Using Elephant Toothpaste" to demonstrate the differences between exothermic and endothermic reactions. 

 

November 2023: Myers Ganoug Elementary STEM Night

PAWS members attended another great elementary school outreach event where we demonstrated how to extract DNA from strawberries and some awesome color changing chemistry. 

 

October 2023: Spooktacular at Flandrau Planetarium

Every year the Flandreau Observatory hosts Spooktacular - a halloween themed event where kids can dress up and participate in demonstrations from different STEM groups across campus. PAWS had a table at Spooktacular and had a variety of demonstrations and activities for the kids to take part in. This year we presented some cool color chemistry centered around how different oxidation states can change the color of a substance. 

 

 

2023 Spring

April 2023: Steele Elementary School STEM Night

PAWS was pleased to be invited to the Steele Elementary School STEM Night - an event where elementary school children got to experience different activities and demos related to various STEM fields. PAWS taught children about chemical reactions with disappearing ink and DIY lava lamps! 

 

April 2023: Open house for the new Chemistry Commons

PAWS took part in welcoming our new chemistry building, Chemistry Commons - PAWS had a booth to show chemistry demos to students checking out our new space! 

 

March 2023: Tucson Festival of Books (TFOB)

PAWS was honored to be a part of TFOB this year - an annual book fair held in Tucson, Arizona where PAWS had a booth. PAWS also taught children about chemical reactions with disappearing ink and pH experiments! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

September 2019: Girl Scouts STEM Badges - DNA

Members of PAWS and Alpha Chi Sigma (AXS) were able to host girl scouts on the University of Arizona campus to help them get their STEM badges! During this event, the girl scouts were taught about DNA and diversity, and were even able to extract DNA from a strawberry!
